Running Together: Culture, Commitment, and Connection at UTMB Chihuahua
In October 2025, something meaningful unfolded in the mountains of Chihuahua. During Chihuahua by UTMB 2025, the trails were not only a place of competition—but of connection, culture, and commitment.
Through the spirit of UTMB Cares, a powerful initiative took root: the support of Rarámuri women runners through the Muki program. This effort helped provide travel and equipment—removing barriers and opening doors for participation. But more than that, it created space for these incredible women and men to be seen, celebrated, and supported on a global stage.
For the Rarámuri, running is not simply a sport. It is identity. It is tradition. It is life.
One of the most moving aspects of the event was the inclusion of rarajípári and rowera (ariweta) races—traditional Rarámuri footraces that are believed to be among the oldest endurance events in the world. These are not races defined by finish lines alone. They are deeply communal and spiritual, strengthening bonds between people, honoring ancestors, and reinforcing a way of life that has endured for generations.
To witness these races at the UTMB finish line was something rare and beautiful. People from around the world were given the opportunity not just to watch—but to learn, to feel, and to appreciate a culture rooted in endurance, humility, and connection.
At True Messages, we were honored to play a role in organizing these cultural events. It was important to us that these traditions were shared in a way that felt respectful, authentic, and true to the Rarámuri spirit.
We were also deeply grateful to receive support from UTMB to continue the work of True Messages. This kind of partnership goes beyond a single event—it represents a commitment to people, to culture, and to creating opportunities that last.
What stood out most during those days in Divisadero and Creel was a feeling—one that is hard to fully put into words. It was the spirit of mutual respect. Of cultures coming together, not to change one another, but to honor and learn from each other.
This is what running can be.
Not just miles.
Not just medals.
But a bridge.
A bridge between worlds.
A bridge between traditions and new opportunities.
A bridge built on respect, humility, and shared humanity.
And in Chihuahua, for a few beautiful days, that bridge was strong.
