True Messages is excited to be able to sponsor and support the production of the Busureliami Radio program along with Tierra Nativa and Makawi. This program represents a significant opportunity to further the knowledge and education of the Raramuri youth on the wisdoms and learnings from their grandparents and all the grandparents before them.

We plan on making on making these broadcasts available for everyone to enjoy. Even though they will be in the Raramuri language, the programs include music and song and other elements that everyone will be able to experience and appreciate.

Martin “Makawi” Chavez Ramirez on the Busuréliami Radio Program:

“The educational program of Busuréliami is my own vision of the Rarámuri identity, as told in the Rarámuri tongue so that the children awaken from the inside to realize what it is to be Rarámuri. Many of us are losing an important part of our ancestral education. Education Raramuri is spiritual.   It is about how to connect with the beings of the earth. It is about who are these beings of the Mother Earth and how they came to exist. Busuréliami means “to awaken from the inside, to awaken from the heart.

The themes in this series of talks are the teachings of our grandfathers, and the grandfathers of our grandfathers who lived in the same territory where we are today, and that tomorrow will be of our grandchildren.  It is extremely important that our Pueblos live the spirit of our grandfathers and that we not allow anyone to destroy our awakening of life.

Through these radio programs we reach the hearts of the children, the youth, the parents and the grandfathers, so that they retake that path guided by the teachings which the grandfathers obtained in ancient times.   These teachings are extremely important today as many in our pueblo have lost the path.”

Makawi has written full scripts for the ten radio programs.   Twenty programs in all are planned for the first edition of this series. They are designed to correspond with the traditional Raramuri calendar, based on the cycles of planting, flowering and harvesting corn.

Programs one through four have been recorded professionally and the first two programs are currently circulating on Radio XETAR, Guachochi, in the Sierra Tarahumara reaching a potential 40,000 Tarahumara in five municipios in the Sierra and beyond.  The second two programs began circulating in September. We are hopeful that each month, one or two new programs will be introduced and broadcast repeatedly.   Makawi plans to add periodic live performances, interviews and “lectures” to the recorded messages.
